![]() Most of Wo Long works well, but I hit a major difficulty spike during the first boss. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is mostly linear, but offers multiple paths to reach your destination. The preview build showcased dozens and dozens of Wizardry Spells, each with a different ability you can utilize during combat. My favorite Spell allows you to temporarily recover health when dealing damage to enemies. These abilities add a bit of flavor to the combat, allowing you to unleash devastating fireball attacks or more defensive techniques that give you an edge. Wo Long sets itself apart with its Wizardry Spells, which are unlocked via a skill tree. You can even sneak up on unsuspecting enemies to take them out in one hit, which is as satisfying as you’d expect. ![]() This gives each battle some variety while encouraging you to experiment when taking down your foes. You’re able to quickly unleash a barrage of melee attacks while chaining together spells and other abilities in an intuitive way. Right away, the game shines thanks to its fluidity, both in and out of combat. Wo Long boasts an impressive combat suite, giving players lots of variety in how they choose to tackle fights. This gives you multiple ways to reach your objectives, without forcing you down a specific path. This means you’ll not only get to explore on a flat plain, but also on the rooftops of buildings and other large structures - all with the use of the jump button. This makes the game much more approachable than Elden Ring or even some of FromSoftware’s more labyrinthian areas like Anor Londo from the original Dark Souls.īut there’s also a high degree of verticality in Wo Long, much like Sekiro. Elden Ring’s open world is certainly awe-inspiring and fascinating, but there’s merit to simplicity, allowing players to intimately learn the interworkings of each stage. Unlike Elden Ring, Wo Long is a mostly linear experience, offering large, enclosed levels to explore. Along the way, you’re introduced to stealth mechanics, an in-depth upgrade system, new gear, and its fast-paced action combat. What that means, however, is that there are plenty of impressions and footage of the demo on YouTube. The preview build gave us an early look at the game’s opening, with a tutorial featuring a lengthy, linear area to explore. Boss battles will, of course, be a major focus of Wo Long, and will include fights with the aforementioned legendary figures like Lu Bu.Ī limited-time demo of Wo Long was released in September 2022, and it’s possible Koei Tecmo could release another demo before launch. When an enemy’s Spirit decreases to a certain level you can use a Fatal Strike to finish it off instantly. Wo Long has a Deflect move that players can use to block an enemy's attack, which also reduces their Spirit. Spirit seems very similar to Sekiro’s Posture system, as it dictates how both players and enemies will be able to use attacks. Where the comparison to Sekiro really comes in is with Wo Long’s Deflect and Spirit system. Divine Beast seem to grant players powerful attacks, but it’s not exactly clear how they’re unlocked and how they function. The game’s website shows off a fiery Phoenix named Zhuque, an electric tiger named Baihu, and a water-powered turtle named Xuanwu. These spells are themed around different elements like fire, ice, and lightning, and by raising something called “Morale Ranks” you can unlock even stronger spells.ĭivine Beasts look like one of the more unique aspects of Wo Long, letting players summon powerful creatures to help during battle. There are a host of different abilities and weapons players can use during Wo Long, including different weapons, wizardry spells, and “Divine Beasts.” Weapons include the likes of glaives and dual swords, while the Phase you pick will help decide which wizardry spells you can use. ![]() The game’s combat system is built around Chinese martial arts, and during the detailed character creation players will choose a “Phase,” or class for their character. Wo Long is a high-speed action game that bears a lot in common with Nioh, but also seemingly takes a bit of inspiration from Sekiro. Divine Beasts and wizardry provide a wealth of different options in combat. ![]()
